A hot economy and $100 oil are fanning fears about inflation.

Yields on the US government's longest-dated bonds climbed to the highest level in more than two decades, the latest milestone notched in an extended bond selloff driven by inflation and fiscal concerns. The rate on 30-year Treasuries rose as much as four basis points on Thursday to 5.44%, the highest since 2004, after Brent crude oil prices jumped. It follows a surge this week that left yields across maturities around the highest levels since 2007. Stocks and bonds in Asia were set to decline Thursday, tracking Wall Street losses as an oil rally and stronger-than-expected US economic data fueled inflation concerns and bets on further interest-rate hikes. The yen, near a three-week low, will be in focus as Japanese markets reopen.

New Zealand’s central bank warned that near-term inflation could exceed its latest estimates, adding to signs it could raise interest rates again as soon as October.

Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President Alberto Musalem said additional interest rate increases may be needed to achieve the central bank’s inflation goal, adding that monetary policy may still be stimulating the economy after this month’s hike.
