O pesquisador sênior e especialista em monitoramento Sher Muhammad, do ICIMOD, explica que análises preliminares com base em registros de satélites foram o suficiente para reconstruir a fonte e o caminho da cascata. Além disso, dois trabalhos são úteis para analisar os colapsos, mas ainda não passaram pela revisão de pares. “A dinâmica é semelhante àquela do desastre de Chamoli, em 2021, na porção indiana do Himalaia. Os estudos da época mostraram como um grande colapso envolvendo rochas e glaciar pode rapidamente se transformar em uma enchente com impactos devastadores.” Embora os eventos sejam muito parecidos, Muhammad alerta para a necessidade de confirmar os dados iniciais e só então comparar, definitivamente, os cenários de Chimodi e Rasuwa. A hipótese de um colapso na ligação entre rocha e glaciar (geleira) é a mais aceita internacionalmente. Segundo o especialista Jefferson Simões, que coordena o Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia da Criosfera (INCT Criosfera), a piora nas condições climáticas pode levar à perda de aderência entre o glaciar e a rocha que o sustenta, acumulando água e contribuindo para a quebra das rochas. “São eventos conhecidos, ocorrem de tempos em tempos, porque são geleiras em montanhas com vertentes muito íngremes”, explica Simões, que também é professor da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRS). O problema maior é quando há proximidade entre zonas habitadas e estes locais. Um evento semelhante, na região de Yungay, no Peru, matou cerca de 20 mil pessoas. “O Instituto Nacional de Geleiras e Ecossistemas de Montanha do Peru monitora quase 60 geleiras que apresentam graus diferentes de risco. Vales de origem glacial são muito íngremes. Quando provoca uma queda aquela mistura de água, gelo, lama, rocha, tudo vem ladeira abaixo, e vem arrasando tudo. A diferença dessa vez é que se filmou.” Outro ponto destacado por Simões é que a água de derretimento geralmente forma lagoas na frente da geleira. “Isso se dá porque o próprio gelo transporta sedimentos que formam uma barreira e vai acumulando água. Quando essa massa enorme de gelo e rocha invade esse lago há o estouro da barreira natural”. Hoje, na região de Rasuwa, o governo nepalês mantém dois lagos glaciais sob vigilância. Embora recentes, já estiveram perto do ponto de extravasamento há cerca de uma semana. Aquecimento global Embora as autoridades locais e da Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU) já tenham indicado o perigo do aquecimento global para a condição das geleiras, tanto Simões quanto Muhammad foram taxativos ao afirmar que não há elementos suficientes para atribuir o desastre em Rasuwa exclusivamente ao fenômeno. Apesar disso, não podemos dizer que o aquecimento é causa direta do colapso”, pondera Muhammad. O especialista paquistanês destacou ainda a importância cada vez maior de mapeamento e acompanhamento das condições locais. De acordo com ele, embora não seja possível impedir colapsos naturais, é possível reduzir suas consequências combinando melhorias no monitoramento, melhor uso das terras em áreas de risco e estratégias de aviso precoce e evacuação. “Precisamos de um monitoramento sistemático por satélite de geleiras e encostas potencialmente instáveis em toda a região, de forma regular, seguido por uma observação mais intensa dos pontos críticos identificados usando câmeras, sensores sísmicos, instrumentos de campo e medidores de rios. Essas observações devem estar diretamente conectadas aos sistemas de alerta prévio.” Para Muhammad, a principal lição do colapso de agosto é que monitorar geleiras, encostas e rios separadamente não é mais suficiente. “Eles precisam ser tratados como um sistema de risco conectado.”
